Message from SRE Islamic :

Call for Action – Muslim Parents living in Walthamstow need to stand up to attempts to include more Sex and Relationship Education in Walthamstow schools

Stella Creasy, Labour MP for Walthamstow, is organising a conference on Saturday 24th January 2015 titled 'Our Bodies, Our Future. It is part of a campaign to 'ensure the best Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) is provided in every school.' http://ymlp.com/zQYK6t

As a Muslim parent this should concern you for the following reasons:

1. Stella Creasy is at the forefront of the campaign to make SRE a statutory subject in schools.  If this were to happen, the right of parents to withdraw their children from SRE classes (from 5-19 years old) would inevitably be taken away. On this occasion she is trying to get SRE established in Walthamstow schools through the back door.

2. This event is similar to the approach of most groups that want SRE made statutory, parents are talked down to and told what is best for their children, ignoring the deeply held moral/religious values you as parents hold in this area.  Parents raise children and not schools, as such they are best placed to have discussions around sex and growing up, on the basis of their values.

3. The billed speakers are from the same perspective, they believe in making SRE statutory and have little concern for the views of parents. One of the speakers, Simon Blake, is the chief executive of Brook, an organisation which advises teachers that the following behaviours in children are perfectly natural.

9- 13 year olds – solitary masturbation and having girl/boyfriends who are of the same, opposite or any gender

13-17 years old - interest in erotica/pornography, having sexual or non-sexual relationships, consenting oral and/or penetrative sex with others of the same or opposite gender who are of similar age and developmental ability
